INESC TEC and the University Hospital Centre of São João sign a strategic collaboration protocol in the field of health technologies

The agreement was signed during INESC TEC Autumn Forum, attended by the Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, and the Secretary of State for Health

07th December 2021

INESC TEC and the University Hospital Centre of São João (CHUSJ) signed a collaboration protocol that aims to support the creation and coordination of new opportunities in emerging areas of health technologies. The document, deriving from the common vision of both institutions in terms of technological innovation, was signed during INESC TEC Autumn Forum, attended by Manuel Heitor, Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, and Diogo Serras Lopes, Secretary of State for Health.

The areas identified in this partnership correspond to real problems or challenges experienced in daily hospital settings, namely telemedicine and telemonitoring, hospital management, green hospital – digitalisation and sustainability, clinical decision support systems, open databases, health information systems, data science and artificial intelligence, IoT (internet of things) technologies and robotics.

In this sense, this collaboration endeavour represents a continuous commitment to technological innovation in health, an area where INESC TEC has been working for several years, particularly in the development of technologies that support healthcare professionals - in areas like cancer management, disease screening, neuroengineering, hospital management or public health policies.

“With this protocol, we aim to increase the relevance and impact of our health research activities on the community. We are committed, from the outset, to contribute to the reinforcement of the CHUSJ's success in the various aspects of the institution's mission, from healthcare to training and research. And we intend to act together, and with greater determination, in strengthening the ecosystems of health innovation in which both institutions are involved, namely at the University of Porto and in our region”, said João Claro, chairman of INESC TEC's Executive Board and professor at FEUP.

"This protocol will bring the investment made in research and development of technologies closer to the real needs of the Hospital, and the difficulties experienced each day, involving the scientific community in the research of new, more integrated solutions that help CHUSJ to improve the provision of care among patients. The CHUSJ signs this protocol with this picture of the future in mind", said Fernando Araújo, Chairman of CHUSJ's Board of Directors.
