New General Discrete-Time Scheduling Model for Multipurpose Batch Plants

Abstract
This work deals with the optimal short-term scheduling of general multipurpose batch plants, considering multiple operational characteristics such as sequence-dependent changeovers, temporary storage in the processing units, lots blending, and material flows traceability. A novel Mixed Integer Linear Programming (MILP) discrete-time formulation based on the State-Task Network (STN) is proposed, with new types of constraints for modeling changeovers and storage. We also propose some model extensions for addressing changeovers start; nonpreemptive lots; lots start and sizes; alternative task-unit and task-unit-layout assignments. Computational tests have shown that the proposed model is more effective than a similar model based on the Resource-Task Network (RTN).

An approach for integrated design of flexible production systems

Abstract
The paper presents a holistic methodological approach for designing flexible production systems, integrating the management of the production resources, operations planning, internal logistics and quality. The proposed methodology relies on lean principles and encompasses a series of stages and tools that may be used to design and to assess the robustness of the production system for tackling small series and frequent changes in the productive processes due to customized production. This approach has been applied to the redesign of the production system of a Portuguese machinery manufacturing industrial company. Results show that it effectively led to a new flexible production system and a new industrial layout capable of responding to diverse future scenarios of products demand. (C) 2013 The Authors. Situating Case Studies Within the Design Science Research Paradigm: An Instantiation for Collaborative Networks

Abstract
A rigorous evaluation of an artifact is one of the fundamental aspects to be considered in Design Science Research projects. This evaluation part becomes even more difficult when a large variety of artifacts must be designed for a project. This can be a challenge for the field of Collaborative Networks, which involves knowledge from several scientific disciplines. Case studies are one of the evaluation methods in Design Science Research that are used for an ex-post evaluation of artifacts. However, we argue that this method can also be used for the ex-ante evaluation, mainly when multidisciplinary research is being carried out. Therefore, the main objective of this paper is to present and discuss a multidisciplinary project of Collaborative Networks using case studies before and after the design of the artifacts. On top of the Design Science Research guidelines, this research is supported by knowledge from Business and Management Studies on how to effectively design and perform Case Study Research for artifact evaluation.

The Dial-a-Ride Problem with Split Requests and Profits

Abstract
In this paper we introduce the dial-a-ride problem with split requests and profits (DARPSRP). Users place transportation requests, specifying a pickup location, a delivery location, and a time window for either of the two. Based on maximum user ride time considerations, the second time window is generated. A given fleet of vehicles, each with a certain capacity, is available to serve these requests, and maximum route duration constraints have to be respected. Each request is associated with a revenue and the objective is to maximize the total profit, that is, the total revenue minus the total costs. Transportation requests involving several persons may be split if it is beneficial to do so. We formulate the DARPSRP as a mixed-integer program using position variables and in terms of a path-based formulation. For the solution of the latter, we design a branch-and-price algorithm. The largest instance solved to optimality, when applied to available instances from the literature, has 40 requests; when applied to newly generated instances, the largest instance solved to optimality consists of 24 requests. To solve larger instances a variable neighborhood search algorithm is developed. We investigate the impact of request splitting under different geographical settings, assuming favorable settings for request splitting in terms of the number of people per request. The largest benefits from request splitting are obtained for problem settings exhibiting clustered customer locations.

Institutional networks for supporting the internationalisation of SMEs: the case of industrial business associations

Abstract
Purpose - This paper aims to study and explore the activities and the use of institutional network resources by industrial business associations (IBAs) to support and facilitate internationalisation processes of small-and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Other goals are to understand the internationalisation follow-up process and the future vision of IBAs to improve this internationalisation support. Design/methodology/approach - Based on empirical evidence and following an abductive approach, this paper presents a qualitative exploratory field research, providing insights from interviews performed with 20 IBAs based in Portugal. Findings - The findings suggest that the current institutional network support to internationalisation is mainly provided through promotional activities; counselling, training and technical and legal support; information sharing; and cooperation with other institutional entities. Each support category is explored and explained and a new conceptual model is developed to represent these findings. Regarding the internationalisation follow-up, IBAs provide a continuous support for the international operations by using some instruments and mechanisms to assist SMEs after an internationalisation initiative. Finally, collaboration and the use of new information technology are the main aspects to improve IBAs' support in a near future. Research limitations/implications - The qualitative methodological approach adopted in this work can imply a larger difficulty to obtain a generalisation of the findings. Another limitation is that the participating IBAs are based in only one country. Practical implications - Findings can help SMEs to understand the functioning and the benefits of using the institutional network resources of IBAs in overcoming their lack of resources to operate in international markets. IBAs can also understand their current position in terms of internationalisation support and think about new ways for improving this support. Originality/value - This paper contributes to a better understanding of the influence of institutional networks in SME internationalisation by exploring the specific role of one of the institutional actors rather than focusing on the institutional network as a whole. Therefore, this study details the current activities and uncovers other types of support provided by IBAs that are not based on export promotion programmes. New knowledge is also obtained about the specific information content, information sources and means and channels of information sharing used by IBAs for supporting SME internationalisation.

A Multi-User Integrated Platform for Supporting the Design and Management of Urban Mobility Systems

Abstract
Public transport networks were, in the past, mainly designed to maximize the efficiency of commuting trips. However, with such perspective there are considerable risks to marginalize some specific population groups (e.g. disabled, elderly, children, pregnant, people in poverty). For enhancing social inclusion and improving the accessibility of more vulnerable citizens, such networks are often redesigned and adjusted. Nevertheless, even with such adjustments, it is sometimes difficult to provide efficient services that fully address the real needs and capabilities of travelers, partially because of the failure in following the fast technological and demanding changes of modern societies. Taking in mind these challenges, we have developed a conceptual model to support knowledge sharing and decision-making in urban mobility, and to improve the way travel information is addressed. The multi-user integrated platform proposed in this work is supported by the idea that information from different channels must be centralized, organized, managed and properly distributed. This idea is grounded in two main principles: (i) past and real-time information from a wide range of sources is combined for knowledge extraction, and such knowledge is going to be used not only to allow travelers to better plan their trips, but also to help transport providers to develop services adapted to the needs and preferences of their customers; and (ii) information is provided in a personalized way taking into account socio-economical differences between groups of travelers.
