Abstract
In this paper is presented the work relative to the design of an aid system, for athletes with special needs in terms of vision. The system is based on Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology and serves to help visually impaired athletes. Relatively to Paralympic athletics competitions, the main goal is the elimination of current guide runners. The system is prepared to give a stereo audio alert, when a runner deviates from his lane central area. The paper presents the main components, namely, the RFID infrastructure and the mobile parts. Tests to tags, infrastructure setting and positioning functions are also presented. (C) 2014 The Authors. Published by Elsevier Ltd. A Comprehensive Study on Enterprise Wi-Fi Access Points Power Consumption

Abstract
Wi-Fi networks are becoming more and more ubiquitous and represent a substantial source of energy consumption around the globe, mainly when it comes to Access Points (APs). There has been some work done on the characterization of the power consumption of Wi-Fi APs and network interface cards (NICs), and the power usage of these devices under different configurations and standards but mostly using legacy standards. A detailed AP power consumption analysis, exploring the whole set of degrees of freedom and capabilities of these devices is lacking in the state of the art. In this paper, we present a thorough power consumption analysis, covering the configuration options available in enterprise Wi-Fi APs from the three major vendors on the market. The goal is to understand how the power consumption of an AP varies with the different configurations, and provide insights on the parameters that significantly affect the AP power consumption. The obtained experimental results confirm previous state-of-the-art conclusions but contradict some of the studies and results found in the literature, while updating results and conclusions taken in the past to the most recent standards, configurations, and data rates available today. The analysis provided herein is a valuable source of information for deriving new AP power consumption models and designing energy-efficient Wi-Fi networks.

Energy Consumption Management for Dense Wi-Fi Networks

Abstract
Wi-Fi networks lack energy consumption management mechanisms. In particular, during nighttime periods, the energy waste may be significant, since all Access Points (APs) are kept switched on even though there is minimum or null traffic demand. The fact that more than 80% of all wireless traffic is originated or terminated indoor, and served by WiFi, has led the scientific community to look into energy saving mechanisms forWi-Fi networks. State of the art solutions address the problem by switching APs on and off based on manually inserted schedules or by analyzing real-time traffic demand. The first are vendor specific; the second may induce frequent station (STA) handoffs, which has an impact on network performance. The lack of implementability of solutions is also a shortcoming in most works. We propose an algorithm, named Energy Consumption Management Algorithm (ECMA), that learns the daytime and nighttime periods of the Wi-Fi network. ECMA was designed having in mind its implementability over legacyWi-Fi equipment. At daytime, the radio interfaces of the AP (2.4 GHz and 5 GHz) are switched on and off automatically, according to the traffic demand. At nighttime, clusters of APs, covering the same area, are formed, leaving one AP always switched on for basic coverage and the redundant APs swichted off to maximize energy savings, while avoiding coverage and performance hampering. Simulation results show energy savings of up to 50% are possible using the ECMA algorithm.

Green Mobile Networks for 5G and Beyond

Abstract
The heated 5G network deployment race has already begun with the rapid progress in standardization efforts, backed by the current market availability of 5G-enabled network equipment, ongoing 5G spectrum auctions, early launching of non-standalone 5G network services in a few countries, among others. In this paper, we study current and future wireless networks from the viewpoint of energy efficiency (EE) and sustainability to meet the planned network and service evolution toward, along, and beyond 5G, as also inspired by the findings of the EU Celtic-Plus SooGREEN Project. We highlight the opportunities seized by the project efforts to enable and enrich this green nature of the network as compared to existing technologies. In specific, we present innovative means proposed in SooGREEN to monitor and evaluate EE in 5G networks and beyond. Further solutions are presented to reduce energy consumption and carbon footprint in the different network segments. The latter spans proposed virtualized/cloud architectures, efficient polar coding for fronthauling, mobile network powering via renewable energy and smart grid integration, passive cooling, smart sleeping modes in indoor systems, among others. Finally, we shed light on the open opportunities yet to be investigated and leveraged in future developments.

A novel approach to ARQ error control mechanisms for wireless LANs communications

Abstract
Communications in high-speed wireless mobile networks have to deal with large varying transmission and service requirement conditions, often needing complex radio modulatians and concatenated error control functions. For the latter, it is usual to implement Forward Error Correction and Automatic Repeat reQuest (ARQ) mechanisms in, respectively, the Physical (PHY) and the Data Link Control (DLC) layers. Even so, the communication requirements of medium/high quality real-time services may be hard to meet under hostile transmission conditions. In this paper an analysis on some improvements over current ARQ error control schemes is presented, envisaging more efficient communications in high-speed wireless LANs. It will be shown that high performance ARQ schemes can be used at the DLC layer of wireless LANs by carrying critical control information in more robust physical modes. performance comparisons for current and proposed ARQ schemes, and some protocol implementation aspects, are the main focuses of analysis.

Linux software and Bluetooth: a formula to improve accessibility by using Interactive Voice Response systems

Abstract
When accessing and interacting with regular electronic devices or informatics systems, users frequently depend on the sight sense because the information is, consistently, presented in a visual format, despite the feasibility to use additional formats, such as audio. It also happens that the access to the information systems is triggered by the action of the users, hence requiring an awareness of the surrounding environment. These two facts lead to an exclusion of a considerable number of citizens, such as the visually impaired ones, from a fair access to the so-called Information Society. The development of automatic user-aware Interactive Voice Response (IVR) systems can be an interesting solution to this issue, particularly, if the communications are done in a private manner and a low-cost implementation is achieved. In a reply to this challenge, it was formulated a pervasive user detection and communication concept, based on Bluetooth technology and Linux software modules, allowing improved interaction between the personal area information systems and the mobile user devices. To demonstrate the validity of the concept, it was developed a personal area IVR system, based on Linux, being the interaction with the users made by means of the Bluetooth technology.
