Abstract
The Unit Commitment Problem (UCP) is a well-known combinatorial optimization problem in power systems. The main goal in the UCP is to schedule a subset of a given group of electrical power generating units and also to determine their production output in order to meet energy demands at minimum cost. In addition, a set of technological and operational constraints must be satisfied. A large variety of optimization methods addressing the UCP is available in the literature. This panoply of methods includes exact methods (such as dynamic programming, branch-and-bound) and heuristic methods (tabu search, simulated annealing, particle swarm, genetic algorithms). This paper proposes two non-traditional formulations. First, the UCP is formulated as a mixed-integer optimal control problem with both binary-valued control variables and real-valued control variables. Then, the problem is formulated as a switching time dynamic optimization problem involving only real-valued controls.

Abstract
In this work we address the Hop-Constrained Minimum cost Flow Spanning Tree (HMFST) problem with nonlinear costs. The HMFST problem is an extension of the Hop-Constrained Minimum Spanning Tree problem since it considers flow requirements other than unit flows. We propose a hybrid heuristic, based on ant colony optimization and on local search, to solve this class of problems given its combinatorial nature and also that the total costs are nonlinearly flow dependent with a fixed-charge component. We solve a set of benchmark problems available online and compare the results obtained with the ones reported in the literature for a Multi-Population hybrid biased random key Genetic Algorithm (MPGA). Our algorithm proved to be able to find an optimum solution in more than 75 % of the runs, for each problem instance solved, and was also able to improve on many results reported for the MPGA. Furthermore, for every single problem instance we were able to find a feasible solution, which was not the case for the MPGA. Regarding running times, our algorithm improves upon the computational time used by CPLEX and was always lower than that of the MPGA.

OPERATIONAL RESEARCH

Abstract
This work proposes a multi-criteria decision making approach to help assessing and selecting suppliers in the olive oil sector. Olive oil is a protected agricultural product, by region and origin certificate. Therefore to select a supplier, it is of utter importance to inspect and test (taste, colour, smell, density, among others) the olive oil in addition to the supplying company. The identification of possible suppliers was done in two stages: firstly, the region of origin from which to choose possible suppliers was identified and then potential suppliers were evaluated on a set of characteristics for which minimum threshold values were set. From this study, which is not part of the research reported here, we were able to identify the suppliers of interest. Due to the several characteristics and characteristic dimensions used to choose a supplier we resort to the Analytic Hierarchy Process to rank them, this way allowing for a better choice. The rank obtained is robust as the top ranked supplier remains the same for any reasonable change in the criteria weighs and in the evaluation of the suppliers on each criterion. The involved company found the results of value, as well as the lessons learned by addressing the supplier evaluation problem using a more systematic approach.

Abstract
This research aims to help in establishing new legislative directives by testing their impact both on the company profits and on the life of city residents. A case study is developed and conducted in collaboration with the city hall and with eight companies (four freight transport companies and four retailer companies). The impacts are computed by simulating the companies operation under the new legislation and the new routes are used to analyze the impacts on the city traffic, noise, and congestion.

JOURNAL OF HEURISTICS

Abstract
In this work we address the Single-Source Uncapacitated Minimum Cost Network Flow Problem with concave cost functions. This problem is NP-Hard, therefore we propose a hybrid heuristic to solve it. Our goal is not only to apply an ant colony optimization (ACO) algorithm to such a problem, but also to provide an insight on the behaviour of the parameters in the performance of the algorithm. The performance of the ACO algorithm is improved with the hybridization of a local search (LS) procedure. The core ACO procedure is used to mainly deal with the exploration of the search space, while the LS is incorporated to further cope with the exploitation of the best solutions found. The method we have developed has proven to be very efficient while solving both small and large size problem instances. The problems we have used to test the algorithm were previously solved by other authors using other population based heuristics. Our algorithm was able to improve upon some of their results in terms of solution quality, proving that the HACO algorithm is a very good alternative approach to solve these problems. In addition, our algorithm is substantially faster at achieving these improved solutions. Furthermore, the magnitude of the reduction of the computational requirements grows with problem size.

Abstract
The Assembly Line Part Feeding Problem (ALPFP) is a complex combinatorial optimisation problem concerned with the delivery of the required parts to the assembly workstations in the right quantities at the right time. Solving the ALPFP includes simultaneously solving two sub-problems, namely tour scheduling and tow-train loading. In this article, we first define the problem and formulate it as a multi-objective mixed-integer linear programming model. Then, we carry out a complexity analysis, proving the ALPFP to be NP-complete. A modified particle swarm optimisation (MPSO) algorithm incorporating mutation as part of the position updating scheme is subsequently proposed. The MPSO is capable of finding very good solutions with small time requirements. Computational results are reported, demonstrating the efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed MPSO.
