Alexandra F. Marques é doutorada em Engenharia Florestal e dos Recursos Naturais (UTL, 2012), mestre em Investigação Operacional (UL, 2005) e exerce actividades de investigação e consultoria em Gestão de Operações. Desenvolve tecnologias de informação e métodos de Investigação Operacional para apoiar o planeamento e a tomada de decisão, principalmente na área da gestão de recursos naturais. Os seus projectos actuais abordam a alocação e escalonamento de recursos; controlo/simulação e replaneamento; optimização da cadeia de abastecimento; desenho de sistemas de apoio à decisão; planeamento colaborativo e gestão do conhecimento.
A investigação desenvolvida no contexto industrial tem sido aplicada em várias empresas e organismos públicos. Em Portugal, destacam-se Europac Viana, Portucel Soporcel, Celbi Stora Enso, Instituto da Vinha e do Vinho, Instituto dos Vinhos do Douro e Porto, Direcção Geral das Florestas, Forestis, PT Comunicações, SONAECOM, CP, Alliance Health Care, Adira. Participou ainda em projectos de investigação e consultoria noutros países como Israel, Brasil, Chile e Canadá.
Actualmente é investigadora na Unidade de Engenharia de Sistemas de Produção do INESC Porto. é coordenadora do projecto FOCUS: Advances in Forestry Control and Automation Systems in Europe, responsável por actividades de investigação do projecto Produtech-PTI (Novos processos e tecnologias inovadores para a fileira das tecnologias de produção), é co-coordenadora do grupo de trabalho de desenho de sistemas de produção do projecto europeu FORSYS-Forest Management Decision Support Systems. Participa activamente noutros projectos de R&DT tais como o MOTIVE-Models for Adaptative forest management, ORCHESTRA-Orchestrating forest-related policy analysis in Europe.
é autora de 25 publicações científicas incluindo capítulos de livros, artigos em revistas internacionais e em atas conferências. é ainda autora de várias publicações técnicas e de divulgação científica.

Assessment and optimization of sustainable forest wood supply chains - A systematic literature review

Abstract
When it was first introduced, the concept of sustainability in the forestry sector had a narrow focus on sustainable wood production. Since then, this concept has evolved and it now considers now the three sustainability dimensions (economic, environmental and social) of the whole forest wood supply chain. The main objective of this study is then to review assessment and optimization studies that consider the forest wood supply chain and at least one of the sustainability dimensions. To accomplish this goal, a total number of 188 papers, published in English-speaking peer-reviewed journals from 1995 to 2017, were reviewed. These papers have been classified according to the sustainability dimensions explored, the stakeholder's involvement, the modeling approaches applied, the supply chain decision levels treated, the uncertainty inclusion, and case study analyzed. Most of the studies reviewed (84.6%) considered only two sustainability dimensions: economic (31.9%), environmental (13.8%), or a combination of both (38.8%). The first study including the three sustainability dimensions was published in 2005. Most of the studies reviewed (64.9%) focus on the bioenergy industry in Europe and North America, due to the growing interest in using biomass to substitute fossil fuels in energy production. The final part of the paper presents the identified specific features of sustainable forest wood supply chains and discusses a future research agenda in the area.

Abstract
The vehicle routing problem with backhauls (VRPB) allows to integrate inbound and outbound routes, which is an efficient strategy to reduce routing costs and also to reduce the environmental and social impacts of transportation. In this paper, we analyze the VRPB literature with a sustainability perspective, which covers environmental and social objectives, collaborative networks and reverse logistics. First, to better understand and analyze the VRPB literature, all related works are characterized according to a common taxonomy provided for routing problems. This taxonomy is extended to differentiate between economic, environmental and social objectives. After identification of all VRPB papers that include sustainability issues, these are analyzed and discussed in more detail. The analysis reveals that research on VRPBs with sustainability concerns is recent and relatively scarce and the most popular aspects investigated are the minimization of fuel consumption and CO 2 emissions. Future research lines driven by sustainability concerns are suggested for the VRPB as a promoter of green logistics. © 2019, Sociedad de Estadística e Investigación Operativa.

Planning woody biomass supply in hot systems under variable chips energy content

Abstract
The growing economic importance of the biomass-for-bioenergy in Europe motivates research on biomass supply chain design and planning. The temporally and geographically fragmented availability of woody biomass makes it particularly relevant to find cost-effective solutions for biomass production, storage and transportation up to the consumption facility. This paper addresses tactical decisions related with optimal allocation of wood chips from forest residues at forest sites to terminals and power plants. The emphasis is on a “hot-system” with synchronized chipping and chips transportation at the roadside. Thus, decisions related with the assignment of chippers to forest sites are also considered. We extend existing studies by considering the impact of the wood chips energy content variation in the logistics planning. This is a key issue in biomass-for-bioenergy supply chains. The higher the moisture content of wood chips, the lower its net caloric value and therefore, a larger amount of chips is needed to meet the contracted demand. We propose a Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) model to solve this problem to optimality. Results of applying the model in a biomass supply chain case in Finland are presented. Results suggest that a 20% improvement in the supplier profit can be obtained with the proposed approach when compared with a baseline situation that relies on empirical estimates for a fixed and known moisture content in the end of an obliged storage age. © 2017
