Towards Industry 4.0: an overview of European strategic roadmaps

Abstract
New achievements in information and communication technologies (ICT) are drastically influencing several industrial sectors. The provision of connectivity, networked entities, real-time data, and pervasive information is shifting paradigms in industries. However, this rapid evolution requires a proper comprehension and defmition by scholars and practitioners in order to achieve a broad dissemination of the technological progress. Today, the trend towards a digital revolution in manufacturing is known as "Industry 4.0". However, the footprint of these evolutions, the technological borders, and the application frameworks are not yet specified. Therefore, the adoption of this paradigm change still requires more research to further develop the knowledge about the drivers and accomplishments of Industry 4.0. Towards this goal, this paper reviews some major EU industrial guidelines, roadmaps, and scientific literature that led to the depiction of the term Industry 4.0, and explores how key technologies and concepts have been addressed over time. Resource-efficient supply chains: a research framework, literature review and research agenda

Abstract
Purpose - The study aims to define a research agenda for creating resource-efficient supply chains (RESCs) by identifying and analysing their key characteristics as well as future research opportunities. Design/methodology/approach - We follow a systematic review method to analyse the literature and to understand RESC, taking a substantive theory approach. Our approach is grounded in a specific domain, the agri-food sector, because it is an intensive user of an extensive range of resources. Findings - The review shows that works of literature has looked at the use of resources primarily from the environmental impact perspective. There is a need to explore whether or not and how logistics/supply chain decisions will affect the overall configuration of future food supply chains in an era of resource scarcity and depletion and what the trade-offs will be. Research limitations/implications - The paper proposes an agenda for future research in the area of RESC. The framework proposed along with the key characteristics identified for RESC can be applied to other sectors. Practical implications - Our research should facilitate further understanding of the implications and trade-offs of supply chain decisions taken on the use of resources by supply chain managers. Originality/value - The paper explores the interaction between supply chains and natural resources and defines the key characteristics of RESC.

Implementing cyber-physical systems in manufacturing

Abstract
Cyber-physical systems (CPS) are a new generation of systems that integrate computation and physical processes interacting with humans in different ways. Integrated networks of computers, sensors and similar technologies monitor and control the physical processes, reporting relevant data to planners and decision-makers, and vice versa. By means of case research, this paper analyzes the implementation of cyber-physical systems aiming at lead-time reduction in two manufacturing contexts, namely footwear and natural cork stoppers. The results of this research contribute to literature and practice with a conceptual framework for the implementation of cyber-physical systems and the discussion of the challenges of implementing this technology.

Selection of tailored practices for supply chain management

Abstract
Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to investigate what hinders businesses to achieve superior supply chain performance and how this knowledge may be used in the process of selection of tailored practices for supply chain management (SCM). Design/methodology/approach - Literature review and secondary case studies were used to identify hinders of superior supply chain performance. A method for the selection of tailored practices for SCM is developed. Case study research is used to validate the value of the developed method for practice and research. Findings - This research identifies detrimental phenomena that are observed in the management of supply chains: waste, uncertainty, vulnerability, congestion, bullwhip, diseconomies of scale and self-interest. It develops and illustrates a method for the selection of tailored SCM practices. Research limitations/implications - This research did not verify the completeness of the list of phenomena identified. The implementation of the selected practices was not in the scope of the case studies. Practical implications - Researchers may use the phenomena to study the impact of different practices in the overall supply chain performance, as well as to study the interactions between the different phenomena. Practitioners may use the proposed method as a diagnosis and continuous improvement tool for their supply chain. Originality/value - Although the supply chain phenomena have been explored individually in the literature, a holistic approach of the phenomena had not yet been developed to the best of our knowledge. The method developed identifies a set of tailored practices that are in alignment with the context and strategy of the business and decrease the overall effects of the detrimental phenomena.

Risk and visibility in supply chains: An information management perspective

Abstract
The emergence of complex supply chains is one of the most important consequences of globalization. The management of these supply chains requires increased efforts by organizations that, on one hand, are increasingly pressured by customers in terms of service levels, on the other hand, must manage their suppliers from various locations and with different local requirements. In this context, an appropriate management of information flows is needed to create the adequate visibility level for managing supply chain risk. This chapter presents an overview on the concepts of risk management, visibility and information management in supply chains. This study proposes a conceptual framework for the selection of risk mitigation strategies in the supply chain and characterizes the external and internal information flows decision makers need to implement two categories of risk mitigation strategies: redundancy and flexibility. © 2017, IGI Global.

Information management in supply networks: A framework to support risk management decisions

Abstract
This thesis aims at contributing with new research at the intersection of the research fields of information management and supply chain risk management. Information is a fundamental element for an effective risk management in supply networks. In spite of this, research on how to use internal and external information for risk management decisions in supply networks is scarce. Therefore, this thesis main goal is to characterize information models used in supply networks and the supply chain risk management process in order to propose an aggregated model of internal and external information for risk management decision support in supply networks. This work is based on the Design Science paradigm, which will be applied through several research methods: systematic literature review to analyse the current state of the art on information management in supply networks; field research to analyse the influence of different information organisation models in the process of supply chain risk management and to develop an information model based (artifact); and action research to implement the artifact for the definition of risk mitigation strategies in aeronautic supply networks.
