Catarina Maia is the Head of the Technology Licensing Officer at INESC TEC, managing all the Institute Intellectual Property assests. She is invited professor at Porto Business School, Faculdade de Engenharia da Universidade do Porto, and Faculdade de Ciências da Universidade do Porto for innovation and technology-based entrepreneurship courses. Prior to INESC TEC, Catarina set up and served as the managing director of A2B, a business angel investment fund dedicated to technology ventures. She also served as executive and non-executive member in several start-up boards. Her professional experience ranges from software start-ups, large distribution multinational companies and research in international organisations. Catarina holds a MSc. in Management with focus on technology entrepreneurship, a MBA in Management and a MSc. in Microbiology. She is a Registered Technology Transfer Professional.

The role of a Proof of Concept Center in a university ecosystem: an exploratory study

Abstract
The Proof of Concept phase in university technology transfer is considered to be critical for the success of both licensing and the creation of spin-off companies. In the United States, Proof of Concept Centers are emerging as successful structures to address the challenges of this phase. In this paper, we present a framework to assess the role for such a structure in a university ecosystem. The framework is built from previous references that we use to explicitly link the features of Proof of Concept Centers with the challenges of the Proof of Concept phase, and establish their specific contributions to the overall technology commercialization efforts of a university. We illustrate the application of this framework in a case study of the University of Coimbra, in Portugal, and develop a characterization that is representative of the role that a Proof of Concept Center can play in comparable university ecosystems that feature conventional technology commercialization structures, and struggle with the challenges of the Proof of Concept phase. Our study suggests that there is in fact a possible role for a Proof of Concept Center in the regional ecosystem of the University of Coimbra, with a potentially very relevant impact in the technology commercialization process, through networking outside academia and research environments, funding of Proof of Concept activities, and technology entrepreneurship education for the development of entrepreneurial skills for researchers.

Finding interesting contexts for explaining deviations in bus trip duration

Abstract
In this paper we study the deviation of bus trip duration and its causes. Deviations are obtained by comparing scheduled times against actual trip duration and are either delays or early arrivals. We use distribution rules, a kind of association rules that may have contin- uous distributions on the consequent. Distribution rules allow the sys- tematic identification of particular conditions, which we call contexts, under which the distribution of trip time deviations differs significantly from the overall deviation distribution. After identifying specific causes of delay the bus company operational managers can make accurate ad- justments to the timetables without disrupting the service.
