A solution that makes material inspection faster, more efficient and less invasive, with potential applications in areas like recycling, mining, cultural heritage and industrial quality control, has been recognised with the Best Oral Presentation Award at the first edition of IBEROLIBS. But the achievements of INESC TEC’s Photonics team did not stop there; at this international scientific congress, the team also received the Best Poster Award for presenting a new method to create interactive digital representations of cultural heritage objects with information on their elemental composition.

A hydrogen or methane leak may be invisible, but a new generation of sensors developed by INESC TEC will not let it go undetected. Over two days, researchers from the Institute installed and tested a gas monitoring technology at PRF's facilities in Leiria. The technology was developed as part of the Alliance for the Energy Transition (ATE), a project funded through Portugal's Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR).

INESC TEC researchers won three scientific awards and one photography prize at the International Conference on Applications of Optics and Photonics (AOP2026). But their participation went beyond the awards: Orlando Frazão was elected Vice-President of the Portuguese Society for Optics and Photonics (SPOF), while Susana Silva became President of the organisation's Supervisory Board; Orlando Frazão was also appointed President of the Portuguese Territorial Committee for Optics.

Have you ever tried a burger made from seaweed? Or nuggets produced from protein grown in circular systems? The role of algae in food production will become increasingly relevant, and it all begins with the reuse of water from fish farming — as has been demonstrated in the INNOAQUA project.

Macroalgae could become one of the most valuable resources in the European bioeconomy. But how can their production be ensured in an efficient, sustainable, and industrially scalable way? That is precisely the question the BIG-ALGAE project - recently recognised with the STEP Seal, an excellence mark awarded by the European Commission to projects considered strategic for European technological sovereignty and competitiveness - seeks to answer. INESC TEC is one of the partners.

What if it were possible to communicate on a global scale with levels of security that are virtually impossible to compromise? The answer may lie in quantum communications. INESC TEC is studying, optimising, and validating solutions to ensure reliable, stable, and secure transmission at 1550 nanometres (nm) under real or near-real conditions.

Joana Teixeira, a researcher at INESC TEC, received the Best Student Paper Award at the SPIE Photonics Europe conference for her research work, which paves the way for the development of real-time multipoint optical sensing solutions, that is, systems capable of monitoring multiple points simultaneously and in real time.
12th June 2026

The development of new solutions for sensors, photonic devices and highly sensitive monitoring systems is one of the outcomes of a study carried out by INESC TEC, which explored the implementation of Fano-like resonance in fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs). The research was recently selected as an Editor’s Pick by the Journal of the European Optical Society (JEOS) - Rapid Publications, recognising the scientific relevance of the study and the contribution to advancing photonics research.

The Sennayr team, made up of four students from Colégio Horizonte, secured third place at the regional finals of the international STEM Racing competition and qualified for the national stage of the initiative - which challenges students to develop STEM skills alongside project management and business strategy. The team received support from INESC TEC in the production of key components for the prototype that joined the competition.
