INESC TEC supports the development of rural fire management platform

The results of the first phase of the Interoperability Platform of the Integrated Rural Fire Management System (SGIFR) were presented on May 14, at the event “Da Informação do Território à Decisão Estratégica em Fogos Rurais”, organised by the Agency for Integrated Rural Fire Management (AGIF).

31st May 2021

This Platform (PLIS) aims to support and structure the exchange of data/information between approximately two dozen public and private entities (such as ANEPC, DGT, GNR, ICNF, IPMA, IRN, AFOCELCA and REN, among others).

During the first phase of PLIS development, researchers Abílio Pacheco, from the Centre Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship (CITE), José Correia and Henrique São Mamede, from the Centre for Information Systems and Computer Graphics (CSIG), carried out a survey of the current situation of the different entities, namely in terms of: i) data that each entity processes, and the type of processing carried out; ii) entities accessed to obtain data (data sources); iii) computer applications for data processing, and how they interact with other applications; iv) existing data quality and error correction mechanisms; v) entities to whom data are made available, and the periodicity of said process; vi) adopted data/information access policy.

Thanks to this survey, researchers identified different types of issues, more specifically the non-standardisation and the lack of data quality, several gaps in terms of computer interoperability and the low resilience of the system as a whole.

The PLIS project will include two more phases, the next one focusing on the design of the system’s architecture.

Manuel Heitor, Minister of Science, Technology and Higher Education, João Matos Fernandes, Minister of Environment and Energy Transition, Anabela Pedroso, Secretary of State of Justice, and Satu Suikkari-Kleven, Ambassador of Finland participated in the event – broadcast across multiple platforms.

The event’s livestream is available here.

The researchers mentioned in this news piece are associated with INESC TEC, UAb and UP-FEUP.
