INESC TEC showcased robotics and mobility technologies at AED Days 2024
INESC TEC participated in the 11th edition of AED Days 2024, which took place from May 7 to 9 (Oeiras) – with a technological exhibition in the fields of robotics and mobility. This event brought together the Portuguese Aeronautics, Space and Defence ecosystem – with the main international players in these industries – to discuss the present and future challenges of said sectors.

At the stand, INESC TEC presented the results of the ATLANTIS project, which created a pioneering platform in Europe capable of demonstrating the robotic technologies and solutions that are vital to the inspection and maintenance of offshore wind farms around the world; the Institute also showcased the FLY.PTproject, which developed a prototype of a new transportation system, combining an autonomous electric vehicle with an autonomous aerial vehicle – through the coupling/decoupling of a passenger booth, allowing horizontal and vertical mobility.
The NAUTILUS and RAVEN solutions stem from these projects: autonomous robotics technologies that can be used for aerial and underwater inspection tasks of several crucial resources, e.g., mooring cables, foundations, floating structures and turbine. In addition to these solutions, INESC TEC also presented the precise landing technology – a solution capable of working day and night, and in extreme environments (with an international patent application submission).
“The presence of INESC TEC made it possible to demonstrate the applicability of the aforementioned results to new sectors, especially in the areas of Security and Defence, as well as the technical and scientific skills of the team involved in the development of autonomous robots, computer vision and AI”, said António Gaspar, responsible for the development of business activities in the Defence sector at INESC TEC.
Regarding the possible use of these technologies, António Gaspar stated that “the results presented at the event are ready to be transferred to the market. The technologies have already been demonstrated in a real and operational environment and are available for licensing”.
It’s worth mentioning that INESC TEC welcomed several institutional entities, namely the Deputy Chief of Staff of the Navy, Vice-Admiral António Henriques Gomes, the Chief of Staff of the Army, General Eduardo Mendes Ferrão, and the Secretary of State for Economy, João Rui Ferreira.
António Gaspar, Andry Maykol Pinto, Daniel Campos, João Campanha and Rafael Marques represented INESC TEC at the event.
The researchers mentioned in this news piece are associated with INESC TEC, UP-FEUP and FCT.
