INESC TEC researchers win third place in hackathon
Soraia Ramos, technical specialist at the Management Support Services, Susana Barbosa and Yulia Karimova, researchers at the Centre for Information Systems and Computer Graphics (CSIG) of INESC TEC, are part of the InsTmaDMP team that won third place in the Hackathon on maDMPs, an event that took place between May 27 and 29, 2020.

The team managed to reach the top three in all categories (Innovation, Collaboration and Impact), thus showing the relevance of the work carried out by the team at INESC TEC and the University of Porto. The initiative aimed to “analyse the workflows of Data Management (RDM) in different institutions, namely the Institute for Systems and Computer Engineering, Technology and Science (INESC TEC), the Faculty of Psychology and Education Science of the University of Porto (FPCEUP), the Portuguese Oncology Institute of Porto (IPO-Porto) and the George Washington University ”, explained Yulia Karimova. “In addition, we also analysed the process of creating the Data Management Plan (DMP) in these institutions and compared our methodologies with the machine-actionable DMP concept. In this sense, we were able to identify elements that require changes (addition, deletion and editing) in our own DMP, in order to make them machine-actionable, as well as certain requirements for improving the RDM workflows of our institutions, in order to make the DMP compatible with the maDMP concept”, added the researcher.
For the researchers, this acknowledgement is very important, because “the results represent the starting point for the application of the maDMP standard in institutions, where there are no well-defined and established RDM workflows”. In addition, and according to them, “this work shows which processes and structures should be examined from the start, in order to understand the current situation of the institution concerning the DMP”.
In order to disseminate the work carried out during the hackathon, a report comprehending the initiatives by all teams is currently being prepared. In addition, the group responsible for the InsTmaDMP is developing a paper describing the tasks performed throughout the Hackathon on maDMPs.
