Kelwin’s PhD thesis “Fundamental Topics in Machine Intelligence and their Application to Digital Colposcopy” contributed to this distinction. In his work, the researcher presents key contributions in the fields of computer vision and computer learning, applied in digital colposcopy. The thesis defence took place in 2019, and Kelwin developed his work within the scope of MAPi: Doctoral Program in Computer Science, promoted by UMinho, University of Aveiro and UPorto. The coordinator of CTM, Jaime Cardoso, supervised this thesis.

The prize-winner was Stefano Cresci (Institute of Informatics and Telematics, National Research Council, IIT-CNR). In addition to Kelwin Fernandes, four other researchers received honourable mentions. This prize is awarded by ERCIM, the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics.
