João Gama, full professor at the Faculty of Economics of the University of Porto, was appointed Fellow of the IEEE - Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, the largest professional organisation in the world dedicated to the advancement of technology by humankind.
Every year, IEEE acknowledges prominent academics, whose research projects have an impact on society. Less than 0.1% of the institution's members are selected. Now, João Gama is part of that percentage, as a result "of his contributions in terms of techniques of knowledge extraction from continuous data flows".
According to João Gama, machine learning through data flows is the cornerstone that enables real-time decision-making. “In my opinion, the main scientific contribution is an architecture for the development of adaptive learning algorithms based on data streams”, said the professor.
In addition to teaching, João Gama is a researcher at the Laboratory of Artificial Intelligence and Decision Support (LIAAD), and he believes that he has contributed, in several ways, to scientific developments in this field. “Many works were groundbreaking. In 2004, I organised the first worldwide workshop on discovering knowledge from data streams, and in 2010 I published the first book on the subject”.
A speaker at numerous conferences around the world, including in the U.S.A., China, Holland and Brazil, the researcher now shares the status with other international IEEE fellows, such as Herbert Kroemer and Isamu Akasaki, Nobel Prize winners in Physics, in 2000 and 2014, respectively.
At INESC TEC, João Gama joins Vladimiro Miranda, João Peças Lopes and José Carlos Príncipe. Vladimiro Miranda and João Peças Lopes are Associate Directors of INESC TEC who, due to their merit and relevant contributions in the field of Energy, became fellows of IEEE in previous years. Acknowledged by IEEE and worldwide for his expertise in the area of Computational Neuroengineering, José Carlos Príncipe was, for many years, President of INESC TEC's Scientific Advisory Board (SAB).
“It is always a very pleasant feeling to witness our effort and work acknowledged this way”, stated João Gama. “I would like to thank my collaborators and students. Without them, I would never be able to achieve this worldwide recognition”, he concluded.
The researchers mentioned in this news piece are associated with UP-FEP and UP-FEUP.
