INESC TEC project aims to educate people in Industry 4.0 technologies

CPPS 101 - Cyber Physical Production Systems 101 - is the name of the project that aims to improve the knowledge about cyber-physical production systems (CPPS) and smart manufacturing. The project was launched within the scope of EIT Manufacturing, an Innovation Community part of the European Institute of Innovation and Technology (EIT), and is led by INESC TEC through the Centre for Industrial Robotics and Intelligent Systems (CRIIS).

23rd April 2020

The project's kick-off meeting took place on February 13 2020, at the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Porto (FEUP). Several representatives from FEUP, the Laboratory for Manufacturing Systems & Automation of the University of Patras (LMS Patras), the Technical University of Delft (TU Delft) and INESC TEC attended the meeting, which included a visit to the facilities of the Industry and Innovation Laboratory (iilab).

The new technologies stemming from the “fourth industrial revolution” are a priority when it comes to research and development, but several companies are experiencing difficulties in implementing this digital transition. In fact, the human resources of the industry sector often lack the necessary technical resources for new applications of CPPS.

In addition, newly graduated students in the field may not have sufficient knowledge, considering that in most cases these new concepts are not included in the curriculum.

How can one solve this problem? The CPPS 101 project aims to educate engineering students from different European institutions, young researchers, professionals from the industry sector, European entrepreneurs and the general audiences about the background, expectations and challenges of new technologies that are shaping the future of Industry 4.0 and the concept of smart manufacturing.

What is the purpose of the project? The development of an online course divided into eight modules, with theoretical informative presentations (through texts or videos), as well as theoretical and practical exercises - from both the academic and industrial outlooks.

The online course’s subjects will focus on the basic principles of CPPS, the context of smart manufacturing and the re-adaptation through current technologies. Other modules will revolve around the Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT), digital twins, machine learning, control and optimisation, robotics, and the role of the operator in CPPS.

The following INESC TEC researchers participate in the project: Marcelo R. Petry, Hélio Mendonça, Armando Sousa, José Lima, Manuel S. Silva and António Paulo Moreira (CRIIS) and Ana Cristina Barros and António Henrique Almeida, researchers at the Centre for Enterprise Engineering Systems (CESE). The project was launched on January 1 2020, with a 36,000€ funding, and will last until the last day of the current year.

The INESC TEC researchers mentioned in this news piece are associated with INESC TEC, UP-FEUP, IPP-ISEP and IPB.
