INESC TEC participates in European project to support shipbuilding

INESC TEC, through the Centre for Robotics in Industry and Intelligent Systems (CRIIS), participates in the European project Mari4_YARD.

19th February 2021

The project aims to develop flexible and modular manufacturing solutions in small and medium-sized shipyards, in order to increase their competitiveness – thus helping them address the main issues in terms of costs associated with the activities developed within this market sector.

More specifically, INESC TEC will provide expertise on tasks orchestration mechanisms, develop intuitive human-machine interfaces for robot programming, integrate robot perception and localisation modules and resort to augmented reality technology. Moreover, INESC TEC experience on technology transfer to industry, combined with the close liaison with the University of Porto, will also be a valuable asset to the Mari4_YARD initiative.

According to researcher Luís Rocha, "INESC TEC will contribute to the development of flexible and reconfigurable robotic solutions, in order to reduce the time spent in robots’ programming and configuration – an expected reduction of 60%. Moreover, we will support the development of augmented reality tools to support the operators and their tasks. The implementation of said tools is expected to increase the manufacturing precision and quality by 60% as well".

The Horizon 2020 - The EU Framework Programme for Research and Innovation funds the Mari4_YARD, under grant agreement no. 101006798. The consortium of the project (launched in 2020, with a duration of four years) includes 18 entities from nine countries.
