A project on mobile assets tracking ends with installation in Casa da Música

Two years ago, INESC TEC's Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia (CTM) was challenged to create a solution for the management of mobile assets, in order to address the issues that large organisations - such as hospitals, industries or cultural centres - face in identifying and tracking equipment and processes, thus leading to the reduction of waste.

In line with the mass expansion of IoT technologies, a team from INESC TEC has been working on the WHERE.IS project, led by Wavecom; the project, that is ending, faced a trial by fire: a pilot installation in the Casa da Música (Porto), with the purpose of testing and demonstrating the proposed solution.

Before reaching this stage, the project focused on the development of a system that could integrate a large number of objects and address a set of variables, such as the tracking devices’ consumption and autonomy levels, as well as the complexity, size and dynamics of said indoor environment.

Following the development of new equipment with integrated tracking technology - based on IoT communication technology - and a centralised information management platform, the solution led to a pilot installation in Casa da Música, in order to validate it according to specific actual usage requirements.

It is important to point out that Casa da Música has approximately 2500 musical instruments, scattered over different locations from seven floors; in this sense, the building is an interesting venue to test the real-time monitoring and tracking of instruments and equipment. The final stage of the project comprised the installation of 15 access points in Casa da Música.

INESC TEC worked in partnership with Casa da Música, Wavecom (project leader) and Braga Hospital. The WHERE.IS project was funded by the Portugal 2020 programme and relied on the work of several researchers in the field of optical and electronic technology from the Centre for Telecommunications and Multimedia – with researcher Luís Pessoa as coordinator.

The researchers mentioned in this news piece are associated with INESC TEC and UP-FEUP.
