Industrial Engineering and Management

At CEGI, we aim to pursue research areas that bring these knowledge fields togheter. More specifically, our goal is to investigate the methodologies that should be used to hybridise optimisation and data mining techniques.

Moreover, the relevance of using service design and engineering approaches to better frame decision problems is another goal to be attained.

Activity in each of the fields ranges from fundamental research to consultancy and service provision.

LTPlabs: The INESC TEC spin-off born in 2015 that is growing 60% a year

It was born in a room on the third floor of the main building of INESC TEC. In the beginning of 2015, LTPlabs was established by three researchers and professors at FEUP: Pedro Amorim, Bernardo Almada-Lobo and Luís Guimarães. Teresa Bianchi de Aguiar, Pedro Campelo, Horácio Neri and João Alves, researchers at the Centre for Industrial Engineering and Management (CEGI) of INESC TEC, later joined the three founders in this adventure. Three years later, the spin-off moved to another building for the second time, now employing 25 LTPeers and growing 60% a year.

Secretary of State of Industry visits INESC TEC

On 27 November, INESC TEC received the visit of the Secretary of State of Industry, Ana Teresa Lehmann, and José Sequeira, member of the same Cabinet. The goal of this visit was to present the work developed by INESC TEC and the future challenges for the industry.

Health Parliament project features member of INESC TEC

After three years of existence, the Health Parliament project has now come to Portugal to challenge 60 young people to think about public health policies in the country. The working group, selected from 442 applications, features Mário Amorim Lopes, a researcher at INESC TEC’s Centre for Industrial Engineering and Management (CEGI).

INESC TEC’s Centre for Industrial Engineering and Management (CEGI) is involved in a COST-Action project entitled “Rationing - MISSED CARE: An international and multidimensional problem”, where the goal is to promote discussion about the rationing of nursing care. The project was launched on September 20 in Brussels.

Allocating products on shelves under merchandising rules: Multi-level product families with display directions

Abstract
Retailers’ individual products are categorized as part of product families. Merchandising rules specify how the products should be arranged on the shelves using product families, creating more structured displays capable of increasing the viewers’ attention. This paper presents a novel mixed integer programming formulation for the Shelf Space Allocation Problem considering two innovative features emerging from merchandising rules: hierarchical product families and display directions. The formulation uses single commodity flow constraints to model product sequencing and explores the product families’ hierarchy to reduce the combinatorial nature of the problem. Based on the formulation, a mathematical programming-based heuristic was also developed that uses product families to decompose the problem into a sequence of sub-problems. To improve performance, its original design was adapted following two directions: recovery from infeasible solutions and reduction of solution times. A new set of real case benchmark instances is also provided, which was used to assess the formulation and the matheuristic. This approach will allow retailers to efficiently create planograms capable of following merchandising rules and optimizing shelf space revenue. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

Abstract
This paper presents an empirical assessment of the General Lot-Sizing and Scheduling Problem (GLSP) under demand uncertainty by means of a budget-uncertainty set robust optimization and a two-stage stochastic programming with recourse model. We have also developed a systematic procedure based on Monte Carlo simulation to compare both models in terms of protection against uncertainty and computational tractability. The extensive computational experiments cover different instances characteristics, a considerable number of combinations between budgets of uncertainty and variability levels for the robust optimization model, as well as an increasing number of scenarios and probability distribution functions for the stochastic programming model. Furthermore, we have devised some guidelines for decision-makers to evaluate a priori the most suitable uncertainty modeling approach according to their preferences.

Planning woody biomass supply in hot systems under variable chips energy content

Abstract
The growing economic importance of the biomass-for-bioenergy in Europe motivates research on biomass supply chain design and planning. The temporally and geographically fragmented availability of woody biomass makes it particularly relevant to find cost-effective solutions for biomass production, storage and transportation up to the consumption facility. This paper addresses tactical decisions related with optimal allocation of wood chips from forest residues at forest sites to terminals and power plants. The emphasis is on a “hot-system” with synchronized chipping and chips transportation at the roadside. Thus, decisions related with the assignment of chippers to forest sites are also considered. We extend existing studies by considering the impact of the wood chips energy content variation in the logistics planning. This is a key issue in biomass-for-bioenergy supply chains. The higher the moisture content of wood chips, the lower its net caloric value and therefore, a larger amount of chips is needed to meet the contracted demand. We propose a Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) model to solve this problem to optimality. Results of applying the model in a biomass supply chain case in Finland are presented. Results suggest that a 20% improvement in the supplier profit can be obtained with the proposed approach when compared with a baseline situation that relies on empirical estimates for a fixed and known moisture content in the end of an obliged storage age. © 2017

Cargo dynamic stability in the container loading problem -a physics simulation tool approach

Abstract
The container loading problem (CLP) is a real-world driven, combinatorial optimisation problem that addresses the maximisation of space usage in cargo transport units. The research conducted on this problem failed to fulfill the real needs of the transportation industry, owing to the inadequate representation of practical-relevant constraints. The dynamic stability of cargo is one of the most important practical constraints. It has been addressed in the literature in an over-simplified way which does not translate to real-world stability. This paper proposes a physics simulation tool based on a physics engine, which can be used to translate real-world stability into the CLP. To validate the tool, a set of benchmark tests is proposed and the results obtained with the physics simulation tool are compared to the state-of-the-art simulation engineering software Abaqus Unified FEA. Analytical calculations have been also conducted, and it was also possible to conclude that the tool proposed is a valid alternative. Copyright © 2017 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.
